May Meeting – Open Discussion on Insurance

Wednesday May 19th at 7pm ET

Longtime club member Trevor McAlpine will be leading an open discussion on the topic of insurance.  We’ll focus on automotive but we also want to share an update on the club’s liability coverage and the challenge of increasing premiums.  We’ll also talk about the benefits (real or otherwise) of customer loyalty to a particular provider, combining home and car insurance, and the general trend in recent years for premiums to outpace the rate of inflation.

This is the first of two meetings on the topic of insurance.  Next month we will have two guest speakers from the industry – Alex Alfred and Andrew Count of Hagerty.

We’ll be using Google Meet for this meeting, which works on PCs, laptops, tablets and smartphones.  Chrome browser works best. Use the link below to join the meeting.

April Meeting – Saab Owners’ Conventions Past

Our next online meeting is April 21st at 8pm. All welcome. We will be showing photos and sharing stories of past Saab Owner’s Conventions.  There was a time when we could meet other owners, buy parts and other Saab gear, share stories and explore new places along the way.  We can talk about Carlile, the Canadian SOC, and trips to Trollhättan also.

The Saab Club of North America is still planning on holding the SOC this year in Albany, let’s hope the border opens and life is back to normal enough for the event to proceed.

This meeting will be moderated by Fred Hopper.   We will be using Google Meet.  At 8pm Eastern Time open the following link in your web browser:

We find Chrome works best, and you can use your laptop, PC, smartphone or tablet.  If you want to test the link in advance, please do. Use of your webcam is optional but recommended.

If you want to share photos, videos or PPT slide decks for this meeting and want us to display them  in the meeting, email them to webmaster@saabclub.ca.  If your files are very large, you can also upload them directly using the upload page here.

Meeting Recap – Ron Foss on Canada’s First Successful Gasoline Automobile

The club wants to thank Ron for what was a facinating trip back into the early days of automobiles in Canada. It was also facinating to see how a project to recreate a historic vehicle from scratch can be organized – from reverse engineering the plans, sourcing period materials where available, and handcrafting where necessary. Even navigating the complexities of fundraising during a global pandemic is not something most of us would be prepared to take on, but Ron showed us that all of these challenges are achieveable. If you want to learn more about the project go to fossmobile.ca, and here is a direct link to the project’s fundraising page. UPDATE: Ron was on CBC Radio’s As It Happens on April 1st, you can listen to a recording here. His part starts at 9:44.
