The Saab Club of Canada

The Scarborough Town Centre IKEA Swedish MEET Ball will be 1-3pm Sunday October 26, 2025. We meet in the Swiss Chalet Parking Lot, 300 Borough Dr Unit 1002, Scarborough, ON M1P 4P5, Canada. If you can’t make it this Sunday, there are other Swedish Meet Balls virtually every weekend during the summer.

All Saabs, Scanias, Volvos, Polestars, Koenigseggs, and those who love them are welcome to attend. And although this is an official Saab Club of Canada event, you do NOT need to be a Saab Club of Canada member! Come and meet old friends and make some new ones and enjoy a breakfast or lunch at the IKEA restaurant as well. What is a Car Rally?

• A Navigation and Timing driving event over a specified route
• Can be a serious “TSD” time speed distance with route instructions that are challenging (this one is easy to follow)
• Can be a navigation only route
• Can in professional competition be on “closed roads” (not here we are on public roads at the speed limit)
• Can include requirement to see things on route (photo or ?)
• This event is an easy navigation and timing route with questions and answers needed on the route.

What do you need

• An automobile
• Driver and Navigator in the same car (2 people per car)
• Clipboard or folder for the navigator
• Pen or Pencil for the navigator
• A stopwatch (most smartphones have one)
• Drive at the designated speeds (allowance for stop signs is built in by the rally organizer)
• Stay on the route (this one is not difficult)

• Hockley Valley General Store
• Arrive just after 9:00 Rally starts at 10:00 am SHARP
• Coffee & baked goods available at the store
• Driver’s meeting 9:50 am in the north side of the store parking lot
• 1^st Car away 10:00 am sharp

Where we will end

• Caledon Hills Brewery, Church Pub, Palgrave, Ontario, L7E OK8
• About 1:00 pm
• Hand in Rally instructions
• Enjoy Lunch while the rally organizer scores the rally

The route

• Primarily through Caledon
• Instructions given15 seconds before your car leaves
• Each car leaves at a 1-minute interval from the start
• Have fun and stay calm

Typical rally instructions

• CAS… commence an average speed
• R… right turn
• L at TL…left at traffic light
• AR…acute right ( a turn of more than 90 degrees)
• BL…bear left (less than 90 degrees)
• SSO…stop straight on
• SS…stop sign
• Mileages…62.39
• A “tulip diagram”proceed from the dot to the arrow

• And example instruction… instruction # 45, proceed at 45 kph, follow the road from the dot to the arrowhead, you will be passing the 3^rd line, at about kilometer 23.79 on the route
• Do NOT follow the President and Vice-President. This is for your own good, last year they got lost at the 2nd turn and I am not optimistic they have improved at all.

Thanks to those who came out for our 2025 AGM yesterday. We had great weather for lively discussions in the park and a nice social afterwards. 

Five Board members were acclaimed and assigned Officer roles (all remaining in the same Officer roles they previously held).

We especially need help in two areas:

RENEWALS

If you have a bit of time each month or even every 2 months to help drive membership renewals that would go a long way towards keeping enough money coming in to cover the Club’s meager costs. 

WEBSITE 

We need a volunteer to take over the technical management of the Club’s website and membership platform. Our longtime volunteer Fred Hopper has graciously continued to support us for many years but wants to hand this off to a successor (or 2). If you have the skills or know someone who does, please reach out to me or any Board member to discuss what’s involved.

ETOBICOKE

The first Saturday of every month, year round, rain or shine, is our monthly Swedish MEET Ball at IKEA Etobicoke. The latest installment will be Saturday October 4, 2025 at 1-3pm. It’s located at 1475 The Queensway, Etobicoke, Ontario, M8Z 1T3 IN THE NORTHEAST LOT. October is our last month for our afternoon schedule, we will be moving our Anchor Official Saab Club of Canada event back to mornings from 10am-1pm beginning Saturday November 1st, 2025.

OTTAWA

The following day, Sunday October 5, 2025 from 11am-2pm Volvo enthusiast Alex Sándor Csank (who also helped bring the first Swedish Meet Ball to Ottawa) has organized another IKEA Ottawa Swedish Steel Gathering on his own imitative. If you’ve been to an Ottawa IKEA event before, it’s in exactly the same place – pretty much as far as you can get from IKEA to the West and still be in IKEA’s part of the mall’s parking lot. Cars usually start backing into the spots perpendicular to the 417 (Trans-Canada Highway). There’s plenty of overflow parking to the South.
