Florida now requires Canadian drivers carry an international driving permit

Very interesting … and we even recently had a club meeting about this very topic.  I guess the next step will be to publish information on how to go about obtaining such a permit!

  1. This has since been rescinded …authorities in Florida will NOT be requiring Canadian (Ontario specifically) to have an international licence.

Apparently the problem was that officials didn’t have a way of determining whether or not a paper licence was indeed valid. Since we have secure cards (made by our good friends at G&D), it is not a problem.

CAA actually offered to refund money to anyone who got an international licence.

  2. This really is a poorly planned law. The assumption by parochial Florida legislators must have been that any non-US license would be in a foreign language and so they worded the legislation accordingly. I have a business meeting in Miami next month and was thinking of going a day early and renting a car to check the place out (=spend money). Maybe it’s not worth the hassle….
